It sits on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang, which is one of Bali’s sacred mountains and has an elevation of about 1,175 meters (3,858 feet). The temple is part of a larger temple complex consisting of several temples scattered along the slopes of the mountain. The entire complex is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal gods in Hinduism, and serves as a spiritual site for Balinese Hindus. The temple is most famous for its Gates of Heaven, a pair of towering, split gates that frame an incredible view of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest and most active volcano.
