Himeji Castle's history spans from its 14th century origins as a fort to the 17th century construction of the present day structure by Ikeda Terumasa. Known as the White Heron Castle, it survived centuries of change, including the end of feudalism and even World War II bombings. Arima Onsen boasts a history as Japan's oldest hot spring, with legends attributing its discovery to mythological figures and early records from the 7th century mentioning Emperor Jomei's visit. Over centuries, it was frequented by emperors and samurai, a development boosted by the Nara Period monk Gyoki who built Onsen-ji Temple and the Kamakura Period monk Ninsai who established lodgings.

Mt. Shosha, at an elevation of 371 meters, is located to the northwest of Himeji City. The first ropeway was constructed in 1958. This ropeway used 2 cable cars, named Soyokaze and Sachikaze, that could hold 30 passengers each. In 1992, the ropeway was expanded, and currently operates with 2 cable cars, capable of carrying a maximum of 60 passengers each.
